# Experiment Setup ## Main Experiment Settings To configure and start a new experiment, click **new experiment** in the [Device Home Page](./device-home.md) ![Experiment Page](../../_images/experiment-setup.png) | Number | Element | Description | | ------ | ---------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | 1 | **Experiment Name Input** | Name the experiment. Cannot use commas | | 2 | **Experiment Type Selector** | Choose between **Endpoint** and **Kinetic** experiments. Click **Endpoint** to toggle to an endpoint experiment setup which will trigger the [Endpoint Wizard](endpoint-wizard.md) when **start** is clicked. Endpoint readings must be enabled on the device through [Device Settings](./device-settings.md) for endpoint experiments to be enabled. Click **Kinetic** to enable kinetic experiments which will take measurements at a defined interval continuously or for a defined duration. When **Kinetic** is selected, the **Interval**, **Continuous Read Toggle** and **Duration** options will be visible | | 3 | **Interval Numerical Input** | User input that sets the interval between measurement in minutes | | 4 | **Duration Numerical Input** | User input to set the duration of the experiment. Toggle the **Continue reading until stopped** checkbox on to make the device read continuously until stopped by the user. Duration input will not apply if this is selected | | 5 | **Plate Type Select** | Choose what type of plate is to be read. Note that selecting **6**, **12**, or **Cerillo Co-Culture** plate types will affect which detectors the stratus uses to read wells. **96 well** type will read all detectors and sensors. See [plate mapping](../experiment/processing/plate-mapping.md) for more info on which sensors are used. | | 6 | **Plate Layout** | Opens dialog to edit plate layout for the experiment. | | 7 | **Use Template** | Choose a template to use for the plate layout. Changes can be made to the plate layout after a template has been copied. Changes made here will not affect the original template. | | 8 | **Reset Defaults** | Certain inputs are cached between experiment runs to make it easier to run setup subsequent experiments. For instance, the plate type will default to the type used on most recent experiment run on the device. To reset these defaults to their original settings, you can click this button. | | 9 | **Cancel Button** | Cancel experiment setup and return to the [Device Home Page](device-home.md) | | 10 | **Start Button** | Begin experiment with values input in elements **1** - **5**. If experiment is of type **Endpoint** the [Endpoint Experiment Wizard](./endpoint-wizard.md) will open to guide user through calibration, if necessary | :::{note} Stratus device's 0-0.5 optical density range is not sensitive enough for most endpoint assays. The Stratus is best suited for kinetic experiments or endpoint experiments where the optical density is above 0.5. :::
